  • The World Travel Awards are widely regarded as the most important accolades in the travel industry
  • Almudena Maíllo, Madrid City Council’s Councillor for Tourism, accepted the award, which recognises Madrid’s excellence in the MICE sector
  • The capital’s success can be attributed to its excellent image around the world, the professionalism of the sector and the public-private partnership led by Madrid Convention Bureau
  • In March, the city won the equivalent European award for the seventh year in a row
  • Madrid has been named the World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination 2024 at the prestigious World Travel Awards. It has now won this accolade six years in a row, confirming that the city’s tourism industry excels in hosting and organising professional meetings and international events. Almudena Maíllo, Madrid City Council’s Councillor for Tourism, accepted the award at a gala ceremony held last night in Madeira, Portugal.

Madrid claimed the award, surpassing other nominated destinations such as Singapore, Paris, Las Vegas, Sydney, Doha and Dubai. This sixth consecutive victory now brings Madrid level with Las Vegas for the most wins in the award’s history. Last March, Madrid also secured the equivalent European title for the seventh year running.

Maíllo emphasised that “this award is a recognition of the people of Madrid and of a city that inspires confidence throughout the world for its safety, mobility, cleanliness, and cultural and leisure offerings.” The Councillor added that “it is also a recognition of an industry that is doing its utmost to make Madrid a leading destination in the MICE sector.” She stressed that “this tourism sector is very positive for the people of Madrid, generating a direct and indirect economic impact of 2.327 and 5.238 billion euro in the city.”

Madrid’s success in the MICE sector

One of the main reasons behind this accolade is the excellent image Madrid enjoys all around the world. According to the Tourist Perception Survey carried out by the Madrid Destino Tourist Intelligence Centre in 2023, Madrid scored 8.6 for overall satisfaction, with 9.2 for heritage and cultural agenda, 8.8 for transport, 8.7 for safety and 8.4 for cleanliness.

The capital has established itself as a global leader, with this recognition underscoring its exceptional reputation. The city’s MICE sector has successfully developed a competitive, creative, innovative and committed industry that has so much to offer. This success is the result of the hard work, investment and professionalism of the sector in recent years, as well as the collaboration between public and private organisations.

Madrid City Council works closely with the tourism sector through Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB). While the department headed by the Councillor for Tourism oversees the strategy to position the capital as a destination for professional meetings, MCB brings together more than 225 companies from Madrid, representing all the businesses in the meetings tourism industry. It plays a key role in designing and developing the city’s promotional activities, and it celebrated its 40th anniversary this past April.

Looking ahead to 2025, MCB will prioritise attracting meetings and events in strategic industries that can create synergies for the city, such as cybersecurity, the fintech sector and big data. This will be underpinned by a commitment to sustainability and ensuring that meetings tourism has a positive impact on Madrid.

The Bureau’s annual action plan will place greater importance on initiatives with key inbound markets that bring business travellers to the capital, such as the United States, Europe and Latin America.

These twenty association meetings brought 72,000 professional visitors to the Spanish capital and created more than 42,000 direct and indirect jobs

The majority of expenditure was on areas like accommodation and restaurants, which accounted respectively for 44 million and 20.5 million euro

    • Among these heavily attended conferences hosted by Madrid last year, the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress and European Rotors were of particular note
    • Efforts to attract and support these conferences are carried out via Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), the municipal body responsible for promoting Madrid as a destination for professional events
    • For 2024, Madrid has already confirmed twenty conferences with over 1,000 attendees

Last year, the city of Madrid hosted twenty major conferences with over 1,000 participants. According to economic analysis consultancy Oxford Economics, these twenty professional events alone had an economic impact of 88 million euro on the city, a figure which demonstrates the segment’s importance to Madrid’s tourism industry.

These conferences drew 72,000 attendees to the Spanish capital, enabling the creation of over 42,000 direct and indirect jobs. They included European Rotors, T3chFest, and the congresses held by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), FTTH Council Europe, the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES), the Madrid Association of Pet Veterinarians (Vetmadrid), and the Spanish Society for Otorhinolaryngology (SEORL-PCF).

The bulk of expenditure was on accommodation in the Spanish capital, with 44 million euro spent in total. This was followed by restaurants (20.5 million), event-associated business services (8 million), transport (7.2 million), venue rental (3.5 million), shopping (2.5 million) and leisure (2.2 million).

Municipal efforts to attract and support conferences

The city council’s work to attract and provide support for these major conferences is of vital importance and is carried out via Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), the municipal body tasked with promoting Madrid as a destination for professional meetings.

MCB is directly responsible for submitting bids for the capital to host these events and for providing support throughout the process, as well as offering a pioneering legacy programme which allows conferences to have a positive social and environmental impact on the city in addition to their economic impact. In 2023, it submitted 70 bids and provided support for 123 conferences.

More heavily attended conferences for 2024

In 2024, the city of Madrid will continue to host new major professional events which will further cement the Spanish capital’s leading position in the area of MICE tourism. So far this year, Madrid has confirmed it will host 20 major conferences with over 1,000 attendees.

They include, most notably, those held by the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA), the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), the European Hematology Association (EHA), the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), the Federation of European Risk Management Associations (FERMA), the International Continence Society (ICS), and the International Botanical Congress (IBC). These seven conferences demonstrate the variety of the sectors which choose Madrid to host their events due to both its services and its first-rate MICE tourism offerings./

The Spanish capital wins the grand final of the 2023 World Travel Awards, the tourism industry’s most prestigious international accolades

    • The Spanish capital was competing against the cities that won the other regional categories of the World Travel Awards, including Abu Dhabi, Las Vegas, Paris, Seoul and Singapore.
    • Industry professionals reaffirmed their confidence in Madrid, which was named Europe’s leading destination in the same category of the regional edition in September.
    • The capital’s excellent reputation is the result of the city council’s efforts and its commitment to public-private partnership, implemented through Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB).
    • Madrid’s comprehensive offerings and the professionalism of its tourism sector are key factors in the destination’s leading position.

The city of Madrid was named the World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination at the grand final of the 2023 World Travel Awards, the tourism industry’s most prestigious international accolades, which were given out yesterday in Dubai. The win—the fifth in a row for the Spanish capital—represents a milestone for Madrid, cementing its position as a global benchmark for professional events.

Madrid was competing against 15 winning and nominated cities from the various regional categories of the awards, including destinations like Abu Dhabi, Las Vegas, Paris, Seoul and Singapore. Once again, the capital gained the trust of industry professionals, whose votes are tallied to select the winners of the different categories. The award provides fresh recognition for Madrid, which was named Europe’s leading meetings and conference destination for the sixth year running at the regional European edition of the World Travel Awards in September.

Madrid’s victory at the global edition shows that it continues to enjoy a leading position in the MICE segment. The Spanish capital’s favourable image and reputation are the product of a strong push by the city council in recent years to bolster Madrid’s image as a venue for conferences, fairs and meetings, with a strong commitment to public-private partnership. These endeavours are coordinated by Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), which also promotes the Spanish capital’s MICE offerings and provides advice and assistance to organisers throughout the event process. The bureau has been a pioneer in implementing sustainability and legacy measures in Madrid’s MICE tourism industry, helping it to achieve its current standard of excellence.

    Attractive offerings and professionalism

Madrid’s position as the world’s top MICE destination also hinges on two key factors which distinguish the city and facilitate the success of any event it hosts. The first is its unbeatable range of specialised offerings, which include major assets like its special venues, thriving hotel scene and superb transport links, along with its rich historical heritage, delicious food and endless range of cultural and leisure activities to complement any stay. The other factor is the exceptional professionalism of Madrid’s tourism industry, which guarantees top-quality services, talent and innovation, resulting in high levels of satisfaction among event organisers./
